Toronto police have identified the 44-year-old man killed in an alleged hit-and-run at a Toronto gas station Saturday night.

It happened at a Shell gas station near Marlee and Roselawn avenues at around 9:05 p.m.

According to police, Jayesh Prajapati was struck after he attempted to stop a man from driving off without paying for $112.85 in gas.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A post-mortem examination determined the cause of death to be multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

Max Edwin Tutiven, 39, of Toronto, is wanted for second-degree murder.

Tutiven had previously been classified as a person of interest in connection with the investigation.

He is described as white, with a dark complexion, five-foot-five, 220-230 pounds with dark hair.

Police believe he is driving a 2000-2003 silver or beige four-door Isuzu Rodeo. Police say the vehicle may have stolen license plates attached to it.

Tutiven may have fled to Montreal, police say.

Police are urging him to contact a lawyer and contact police.

In a written statement released Sunday afternoon Shell expressed their sympathy to the victim's family.

"Shell is saddened by this senseless loss of life at one of our retail sites. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim," the statement reads. "Shell's top priority is the safety of staff and customers and under no circumstance are sales associates or any other retail employee to intervene during criminal activity."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808−7474 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222−TIPS (8477).
