Thieves have been breaking into mausoleums in Burlington, stealing valuable mementos left behind by grieving loved ones, police say.

Investigators with Halton Regional Police said they don’t know how many people are involved in the thefts.

The thefts all happened last weekend, between Dec. 2 and Dec. 5 at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery and Bayview Cemetery and Crematorium, located in the Plains Road West and Spring Gardens Road area.

According to police the suspects allegedly entered the unlocked areas then used an unknown tool to access several niches, the final resting location for cremated remains.

Valuable and sentimental items such as wedding bands, necklaces, charms and bracelets were stolen once the suspects accessed the niches.

It is not known how many niches were entered and investigators are still trying to determine the value of items that were stolen.

Police said there is no indication that urns containing cremated remains were disturbed in any way.
