TORONTO - A 15-year-old girl has been released from hospital after being shot in the arm by a police officer in Brantford, Ont., early this morning.

Eight investigators from the province's Special Investigations Unit are probing what happened when officers stopped a minivan being driven erratically through the streets of Brantford.

Police say two cruisers were chasing the vehicle before it stopped.

Officers approached the minivan and one fired his gun during a confrontation with the 17-year-old driver, striking the female passenger in the arm.

The driver was taken to Brantford General Hospital for observation and is now in police custody.

The Special Investigations Unit investigates when there is an incident involving police and civilians resulting in serious injury or death.
