Chris Potter
Meteorologist
Growing up, Nova Scotia native Chris Potter had aspirations of a career in theatre, but his love of physics and atmospheric science pulled him in another direction. Just two days after graduating from Dalhousie University in 2004, Chris earned a job at The Weather Network as a forecaster and briefing meteorologist. Four years later, Chris joined the CP24 team.
Not only does Chris forecast the weather, he has braved more than one climatic disaster. He spent two days stranded at Halifax International Airport during the February blizzard of 2004 known as 'White Juan', where the entire city was shut down and covered by a meter of snow.
Just months before, Hurricane Juan knocked out the power to his family home for an entire week and trees were knocked down by heavy winds. This only left one Tim Horton's open in the city, and people's love of coffee was displayed by the hour long wait for a double, double.
Both events occurred while he was studying weather at Dal which furthered his fascination in meteorology. Chris found these experiences brought out the best in people, as the community banded together to repair the damages.
"The rule of thumb in the Maritimes is that if you don't like the weather, wait an hour. But, I think you can apply that here in Toronto too"
EDUCATION:
BSc with a Major in Physics and a Diploma in Meteorology from Dalhousie University, Halifax.
EXTRACURRICULARS:
When Chris isn't busy predicting weather patterns, he enjoys playing golf but is still waiting to write a one on the scorecard. Chris also loves movies and can easily remember quotes, titles and characters. He is a good asset to any 'Scene It?' teams out there. Chris is an accomplished swimmer, who spent seven years lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons while attending school.
QUOTE
"I love my job because weather affects everyone, people are always talking about it and it is always changing. You can learn something new everyday; the atmosphere is extremely complex and even chaotic".
