Coun. Maria Augimeri says the province has no disaster protocols and should be blamed for the massive explosion that forced thousands out of their northwest Toronto homes on Sunday.

Appearing on CP24's "Live at 5" just one day after blowing up at one of her constituents on live television, the Ward 9 councillor blamed the province for the disaster at Downsview.

She says provincial laws allowing industrial sites to be located near residential neighbourhoods should be struck from the books.

"Just because something is legal, it doesn't make it right," she says.

"The law is an ass. People need to wake up and tell their MPPs to change the law."

When asked about her public altercation with Ancaster Ratepayers Association president Tony Di Santo on Wednesday -- during which she pointed at him and told him to shut up -- she said she was tired, hungry and hadn't showered after just getting off a plane.

She stopped short of apologizing to him directly, saying she was apologizing openly to everybody, and that she had her staff contact Di Santo.

"My office has approached him many times," she said.

Augimeri, who just returned from vacation in Italy, announced Wednesday that the city would hold a public meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Ancaster Ratepayers Association, a local community group, had already arranged to hold a post-explosion community meeting during the same date and time, but at a different venue on the other side of the ward.

Augimeri said she didn't know about the existing plans when she organized what she calls the "official" meeting, but Di Santo says he invited her well in advance but heard nothing from her office until their own meeting announcement.

Augimeri described the blast scene as a "Holocaust" numerous times during Thursday's interview, brushing aside suggestions the term could be found offensive.

"It is a holocaust of all proportions without the human element," she said.

The councillor has made waves more than once in the past. During a council debate in 2006, she shouted "admit it, you're stupid" to Coun. Frances Nunziata when he did not agree with her over a housing project.
