Vandalism

A memorial to Ontario firefighters who have died in the line of duty, which was vandalized in May, is to be restored to its original condition.

Fred LeBlanc of the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA) and Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Rick Bartolucci announced Friday that a fundraising campaign is now underway to raise $500,000 in order to clean up the memorial.

LeBlanc reminded the public that a $11,000 reward is still available to anyone who provides the OPP with information that leads to the arrest of the person who vandalized the memorial.

The OPP has been investigating since May after anti-Liberal messages were spray-painted on the fallen firefighters memorial at Queen's Park. Messages included "Liberal Lackeys," "Guns Bad," and "Dalton Gang."

The person who committed the act of vandalism is still at large.

"It was a cowardly and depraved act of vandalism that struck at the heart of our deep respect for fire fighters and was roundly condemned by the people of Ontario," said Bartolucci.

Bartolucci announced that the government of Ontario will be donating $100,000 towards the restoration of the memorial.
