Two women killed in a fiery car crash in Richmond Hill on Friday night have been identified as York University students Atena Arabsalmany, 21, and Niloufar Khanverdizadeh.
Another victim remains in critical condition at Sunnybrook Hospital after the two-car collision, which took place at about 10:30 p.m. Friday near Bayview and 16th Avenues.
Police say the Mazda carrying the two deceased women struck a jeep on Bayview before bursting into flames. Two others in the jeep suffered minor injuries.
Five police officers attending the scene were injured in the blaze. They were treated in hospital for burns and smoke inhalation.
Police are looking for the driver of a gold-coloured Toyota that stopped at the scene to try to help the crash victims. Investigators believe that driver may be able to help them piece together what caused the collision.
Friends of Arabsalmany and Khanverdizadeh have set up a Facebook page in their memory. It already contains dozens of postings expressing condolences to the family and shock at the tragedy.
One describes Khanverdizadeh's laughter as a childish giggle that made everyone laugh along with her. Friends say Arabsalmany was studying engineering.
Those with information on the crash are asked to call York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423.
