While over than 60 per cent of teaching assistants at the University of Toronto have voted to go on strike, a union spokesperson says students shouldn't expect to see their TAs walking the picket line soon.

Since negotiations are still ongoing, the earliest point at which about 5,000 TAs, student instructors, lab demonstrators, marker/graders and invigilators could go on strike is Feburary.

"We hope it will help our employer take our demands a little more seriously," says CUPE 3902 spokesperson Rebecca Sanders.

Only one-third of the union's membership voted, says Sanders, and there are still several stages of negotiations that need to be passed before the union can legally strike.
