Southbound lanes of Highway 400 between Highway 9 and Major Mackenzie Drive have reopened after multiple accidents on the roadway.
Police say there were four separate accidents involving dozens of vehicles before the noon hour Saturday.
Witnesses tell OPP Sgt Dave Woodford that the accidents started after one driver travelling at high speeds collided with another vehicle.
"There were three separate collisions after that. We had a six vehicle collision, a nine vehicle collision and a 14 vehicle collision just simultaneously right behind each other," he says.
Emergency services were at the scene along with three ambulance buses. Some people were transported to hospital, but there were no major injuries.
Traffic was backed for at least 10 kilometres at one point. The highway was closed for up to two hours.
Black ice and slippery slush has made the afternoon drive on the 400 dangerous.
This is the second major closure on the southbound 400 in recent days. Nearly 20 vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the highway just north of King Rd. during yesterday's snow storm.
