Starting Monday, shoppers at Toronto Loblaws locations will have to pay five cents for every plastic bag they use at the checkout.

The move was made months before a new City of Toronto fee on plastic bags comes into effect on June 1, requiring all retailers to charge customers a nickel per bag.

While the aim of the city's plastic bag "tax" is to reduce the amount of waste winding up in landfills, Loblaws says proceeds from its plastic bag fee will go toward WWF-Canada.

Customers will now have to bring their own reusable bags and boxes if they want to avoid the five cent fee.

Loblaws says its research has found 84 per cent, or four out of five shoppers in Toronto, support the program.

In December, when the city said there would be a new fee, viewers at CP24.com shared a mix response to the news.

Loblaws joins No Frills and Food Basics, which had been charging customers for plastic bags for some time.
