Footage from Chopper 24 shows a fire burning at a construction site near Carlaw Avenue and Queen Street on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009.

Police evacuated several homes near Queen Street and Carlaw Avenue on Monday night after a crane caught fire at a nearby construction site.

The fire broke out at the condominium development at about 5:30 p.m. at 41 Boston Ave. and had been extinguished by 6:30 p.m.

Fire Chief Randy Smith says about 40 firefighters tackled the blaze, allowing residents back in their homes by 7 p.m.

There was no structural damage to the unfinished building, he says.

About 30 100-pound propane tanks were in the burning building at the time, but firefighters managed to turn them off before they could ignite. The propane is used to fuel heaters that warm the worksite, says Smith.
