A mother of four is dead and a Toronto police officer has been stabbed after a Thursday morning domestic incident at an apartment in Scarborough.

The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. at a low-rise apartment building at 30 Eppleworth Rd., which is right next door to Corvette Junior Public School. The school was placed under lockdown as a precautionary measure.

When two police officers arrived they found a man, believed to the husband, armed with a knife and a woman they described as "at risk."

An Emergency Medical Services supervisor who spoke with CP24 says two men were taken to Sunnybrook hospital. One man had been shot in the abdomen, while one police officer sustained serious slash wound to his hand, arm and forehead.

The Special Investigations Unit, which is notified when a police incident involves serious injury or death, was called to the scene to determine whether it should launch an investigation.

Its officers have determined that the 38-year-old shooting victim was shot by police.

Neighbours reported seeing the couple's eldest son behind the home talking on a cellphone without shoes and a jacket. There is no information on if he witnessed the attack.

More than a dozen police cruisers and several ambulances were on scene for the rest of the morning.
