People gather outside a Scarlett Road apartment building where a five-year-old girl was shot on Thursday, May 21, 2009.

A five-year-old girl is in stable condition in hospital after being shot while inside her home near Lawrence Avenue and Weston Road on Thursday night, according to Emergency Medical Services officials.

The girl was inside a unit at 5 Bellevue Cres. when a bullet pierced the window and struck her, collapsing her lung.

Emergency Medical Services officials say her parents first took her to Humber Regional Hospital before she was transported by ambulance to Sick Kids Hospital. Her injury is not considered life-threatening.

One male was taken into to custody as a person of interest but was later released. Police say they're looking for a gunman who used two firearms, and they're also looking for two people who they believe were grazed by bullets.

Police have some witnesses but are interested in speaking to anyone else who saw what happened.

Investigators searched the area with the canine and marine unit, and they cordoned off a section along the nearby Humber River.
