'Pride gives our family a chance to show that family is family'

cp24.com

The Miller family.

Pride means being able to walk down Yonge Street with our son celebrating all that he is, openly and proudly.

As a PFLAG mum, Pride gives our family a chance to show that family is family, love is boundless and that it is not just the LGTB person who comes out - it is the whole family. And that when the whole family comes out, there is some powerful love in evidence. The experience of walking with PFLAG in Pride is amazing. We see young people in the crowd with tears in their eyes - perhaps their parents are not supportive, or perhaps they are supportive but cannot be there to walk in Pride. So we represent all families, not just our own.

My husband and I saw our first Pride Parade in San Francisco in June 1968 - the year before we married. When we watched the movie MILK it was like deja vu - we were there and we have pictures of that parade.

Of course we couldn't have known that 30 years later we would march in Toronto Pride with our own son. We are so proud of him for all that he is and all that he strives to be.

Through PFLAG we try to help families with the coming out process, and my philosophy is that we can change the world, one interaction at a time.

Pride is about love. Pride is about celebrating who we are. Pride is about respect. Pride is about to happen again in Toronto, and for that I am extremely pleased and proud.
