A new report out today says Canadian cellphone rates are amongst the highest in the world.

The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development says Canadian cellphone rates are the third-highest amongst surveyed countries, behind the United States and Spain.

It found the average Canadian spends $551.57 a year on their cellphone bills.

This is based on a "medium-use basket," which includes 780 voice minutes, 600 texts and eight MMS (multimedia messages) per year.

The highest rates were found in the United States at $700.51, while the lowest were found in the Netherlands at $131 over 12 months. Spain is ranked second-highest.

Canada ranks 12th under a high-use basket, and 11th under a low-use basket.
