NEW YORK - Canadian Stephanie Dubois has the first Grand Slam victory of her career.
The native of Laval, Que., defeated French teen Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 6-4 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday.
"I'm really happy to have finally won a match at a Grand Slam," Dubois said. "I'm pleased with how I played and it would really be great to carry this further. I played aggressive and didn't let her dominate."
Dubois, ranked 113th in the world, took advantage of Mladenovic's nine double faults.
The 16-year-old Mladenovic, a wild-card entry ranked 291st in the world, was a junior finalist at Wimbledon in July.
Dubois swept the first set in just 20 minutes but Mladenovic showed some life in the second, fighting back to 4-5 after the Canadian had taken a 4-1 lead.
Dubois, a first-round loser earlier this year at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, will face Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the second round.
Fellow Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., advanced to the second round Monday.
