Toronto police showed dozens of illegal weapons they seized in a new initiative called Project Safe City, which started in March.

The program is a departure for Toronto police in their fight against illegal guns on the streets. Instead of large-scale raids against specific communities, police are going after criminals who are illegally possessing firearms.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, Supt. Greg Getty says 400 firearms were seized and about 250 of those were hand guns.

He says the firearms were legally registered, but for a series of reasons ended up in the hands of someone who was possessing them illegally.

Police say there are about 17,000 gun ownership files under review in the GTA.

No charges have been laid as police have seized “surrendered” guns from owners.
