Students to protest gas-fired power plant in Oakville

The Canadian Press

Students from an Oakville high school are planning to march this afternoon to protest a 900 megawatt power plant planned for a nearby site.

In September, the Ontario Power Authority awarded TransCanada a 20-year contract to build, own and operate the 1.2 (b) billion-dollar natural gas-fired power plant.

Ontario wants new sources of clean power such as hydro, wind and gas-fired generation to offset the impact of plans to close coal-fired plants.

But critics argue there are potential health concerns because of the emissions expected from the proposed gas-fired plant.
