David Bagshaw has been sentenced as an adult to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years after pleading guilty in the 2008 murder of Stefanie Rengel.

TORONTO — A judge has delayed moving the teenage killer of 14-year-old Stefanie Rengel to an adult penitentiary until 2011.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Ian Nordheimer ruled today that David Bagshaw -- who turns 20 in January -- is showing signs of progress in a youth facility, which warranted keeping him there beyond his 20th birthday.

Normally, young offenders are moved to adult institutions when they turn 20, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Bagshaw admitted he killed the Toronto girl New Year's Day 2008, saying he did it to appease his jealous girlfriend Melissa Todorovic, who also was convicted of first-degree murder in a separate trial. Both of them were sentenced as adults.

Bagshaw -- who was four days short of his 18th birthday at the time of the crime -- was handed a life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 years.

Todorovic -- who is now 17 -- also received a life sentence but is eligible for parole in seven years, because she was under 16 at the time of the murder. She is appealing her conviction and sentence.
