TTC to table extending student transit discount plan
cp24.com
A TTC bus is show in this file photo.
The chair of the TTC is looking to introduce a motion that would extend the high school student discount to all university and college students as well.
Last week, students from the Canadian Federation of Students launched the Fair Student Fares campaign calling on the Toronto Transit Commission to protect students from pending fare increases.
On Monday, TTC Chair Adam Giambrone announced that Tuesday, a motion will be considered to extend the high school student discount to public college and university students.
This would bring the cost of a metropass down to $91.25, which is about $18 cheaper than the current adult fare.
The TTC is voting on the motion on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at City Hall.
There are more than 150,000 college and university students in Toronto.

why is that the tax payers always have to pay more taxes and why can't these ttc workers take a pay cut. they over twenty bucks an hour . the ttc chairman and david miller are the two of a kind .they only look out for the rich folks and don't care about the rest of people.

This is excellent. It's about time that the TTC realized that it is one of the only transit systems in North America that doesn't offer a discounted rate for college and university students.
We are paying the highest tuition fees in the country and many of us commute to afford our studies. By making transit more affordable the TTC can build a lifetime of ridership and help us do our part for the environment. It's win, win.

I have no idea why the TTC never considered this kind of an extension IN THE FIRST PLACE. I can't begin to describe how many university/college I've heard that feel the pinch when it comes to getting back and forth between classes, something that should be the last of an high school student's worries.

How could you call for TTC drivers to take a pay cut and then accuse the TTC chairman and David Miller of only looking out for the rich folks.
The TTC drivers are everyday working people, who like yourself, deserve decent wages and job security. You've allowed yourself to by into the capitalist hype that wages are the issue when in fact if Mr. Miller only redirected taxes where it needs to be, TTC fairs wouldn't have to be facing hikes so often.
Let's not create a divide between workers and call people greedy just because they fight for what they receive from their jobs. Support one another and we'll all feel less of a crunch.

that is so bull..the ttc drivers are making nearly 30/hr and the ones in the booth 20/hr, i make 10 an hour and cant afford passes already.they are never satisfied and the bus drivers take there time, skip routine scheduals and show no respect for the people feeding them their pay cheques, THE RIDERS..i have to run to stops and when i do the drivers speed away, is that what am paying for?? or how bout as soon as i enter the bus he pulls away and i almost fall, along with other passengers who are elderly and also who have strollers/kids.stop being greedy and give back to the needy, instead of the other way around, taking from the poor and making the rich more wealthy.help us so we can get off the bus and drive or get a new transit line, especialy for chinese people they take up 85% of each bus if you take a poll..

I wouldn't hold your breath. Adam Giambrone is only trying to gather support for his upcoming announcement of running for Mayor. I say TOO LITTLE TOO LATE. Also, this is only a proposal, they still have to vote on it. If it gets approved these cheaper passes wont be cheaper for very long as the fare increase extends to them as well, making them the same price as they always have been. Don't let them trick you like this by claiming to give a 'discount' offset by an increase.

How about raising penalties for breaking TTC rules plus fining drivers who provide bad service and cutting pay TTC drivers and other unions because not many people can continue to afford these services especially for a broken service that runs very poorly

It may be tabled. It will quickly be dismissed and they'll be discussing ways to further tax and inconvenience their ridership and the taxpayers at large. Of course the thought of cost cutting will never occur to them. Ever. In a million years.

Yeah,we are students, some students work, but a lot of them don't, thus, apart from relying from their parents where will they find additional money to buy passes every month? :@
Our education should be made accessible for us,there should be no fare hike for students. We need the DISCOUNTS please...
