York University offers online service to verify degrees

York University is offering a new online tool in the fight against bogus degrees.

The university has set-up a website where employers and others can find out if someone really has a York degree, the Toronto Star reports.

The move follows an investigation from the newspaper that revealed dozens of fake degrees had been created by a former student last December.

Titled "YU Verify" the online service provides instant confirmation with just basic information like the student's name, birth date, or York University student number.

A university spokesperson told The Star that changes have also been made to degrees and transcripts.
