The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says their work is not complete at the Toronto Humane Society, despite previous indications the facility would reopen in time for the holidays.

OSPCA investigators are assessing the health of more than 1,000 animals that had been in the care of the THS. More than half of the animals have been examined so far.

The OSPCA says it hopes to have each animal looked at before the start of the new year.

The Toronto Humane Society has been closed since late November when the OSPCA carried out a series of raids at the organization's headquarters. Five staffers, including the president of the THS, are facing a number of criminal charges.

The two organizations have had a rocky relationship for some time, according to defence lawyer Frank Addario, who is defending several THS board members charged with animal cruelty.

President Bob Hambley and former president Tim Trow are both among the accused.

The OSPCA has called the shelter a “house of horrors,” saying seven animals they found there were in such poor health they had to be put down shortly after the raid. They also claim a mummified cat shown to reporters was found in the shelter.
