TORONTO - The bodies of two of the four construction workers who died on the job Christmas Eve remain on the scene Friday while investigators continue to probe the incident.

The bodies lay amongst construction equipment on the ground - 13 storeys under the apartment building balcony the five workers had been repairing.

One man is still in hospital in critical condition.

Reports say all five were migrant workers performing repairs on the building at 2757 Kipling Ave. near Finch Avenue.

The victims’ scaffolding ripped in half before four workers plunged to the ground. A fifth man was seen holding on to the scaffolding, but he lost his grip before firefighters could arrive.

"The scaffolding broke for unknown reasons," said Const. Tony Vella. "All five men fell to the ground."

Vella added that the five men weren't thought to be wearing harnesses at the time, but investigators have not confirmed this.

The names of the victims between the ages of 20 and 30 have not been released.

Other employees were in the area at the time of the fall. The Ministry of Labour is on scene alongside Toronto police.

A statement released Friday afternoon by the apartment building’s owners said the incident was a “tragic jobsite accident.”

“We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of those who died, and extend our hopes for a speedy recovery to the individual who was injured,” the statement said.
