Toronto District School Board trustees have voted in favour of saving nine public school pools on Tuesday.

The board had voted to save 30 other pools from going dry last year.

Advocacy group "Let's Make Waves" helped raise the cash to save the pools through a combination of community support and private sponsorship. They were confident the final nine would be reopened as well.

The nine pools have been able to secure sufficient permit revenue to fully cover their operating costs during the period from January to June this year.

The TDSB voted in 2008 to close all school pools if funding couldn't be secured to pay for their operations.

School-related groups as well as members of the community had protested the possible closures, saying the pools provide important education and fitness opportunities for people of all ages.

Proponents of keeping the pools open have suggested options such as naming sponsorships and renting out pool time.

According to Let’s Make Waves, the nine pools that were in danger of closure are:

  • Carleton Village Sr PS
  • Central Tech
  • Earl Grey Sr
  • George Harvey
  • Kensington Jr
  • Monarch Park
  • SATEC @ WAPorter
  • Western Tech
  • Winona/ McMurrich
