Toronto city staff is looking into the idea of separated bicycle lanes on University Avenue, reports say.

The proposal is to follow a model used in New York, which would see bike lanes marked off exclusively for cyclists, according to the National Post.

Manager of cycling infrastructure Daniel Egan told the newspaper that University Avenue would be a good choice, because it is a wide enough roadway and it's a major north-south route that could connect to existing bike lanes. He says they're looking at several routes.

Bike lanes in the downtown core continue to generate controversy with some believing the city isn't moving fast enough on creating a network of lanes, while others fear they may be built on major roadways like Jarvis Street.
