Several major Toronto highways were blocked to traffic Wednesday night while police transported a cache of weapons and explosives they discovered in Scarborough that evening.

Highway 401 was closed between Kennedy and the Don Valley Parkway while police transported explosives discovered storage locker near Kennedy Road and Progress Avenue.

After heading south on the Don Valley Parkway to the Portlands, the convoy arrived at the Leslie Street Spit, where police planned to diffuse the explosives safely out of reach of buildings and people.

The highways were closed between approximately 9 and 10 p.m.

The investigation began after police discovered an "unknown item" they believed could be a danger to the public at about 6:30 p.m.

Police evacuated the area and shut down TTC and GO Transit lines in the area. The Emergency Task Force was called to the scene to investigate and discovered the weapons cache.

Transit service in the area resumed just after 7 p.m.
