Toronto city councillor and TTC chairman Adam Giambrone will not seek re-election once his term is over this fall, but he's not ruling out a return to politics.

Giambrone told CP24 on Monday night that he won't be running again for his seat on council representing Ward 18. In another interview Tuesday, he said he was sticking with his initial plan to leave his council seat, part of his bid to run for mayor.

"I'm looking forward to going off and doing other things," he said. "We'll deal with the future things later -- I've got eight months left so that's what I'm focused on."

He said he has already received one job offer, but it was an immediate job and it was out of province, so he declined it in order to finish his term.

The 33-year-old says he will try to return to politics at either the provincial or federal level at some point in the future.

Earlier this year, Giambrone entered his nomination to become Toronto's next mayor, but those plans took hit after hit when it was discovered he'd lied to the public about several romantic affairs. He eventually dropped out of the race.

The TTC chair's image took even more hits after expense accounts revealed he spent thousands on cab rides, at least one on the evening of a date with one of his girlfriends.

He repaid the city for that expense after it became public.

After the rockiest year of his career, Giambrone says he has managed to focus on the future and not let the gossip get him down.

"You learn these lessons and you come out stronger," he said. "I am just a positive person."

Giambrone was first elected to his council seat in 2003 at the age of 26.

His executive assistant, Kevin Beaulieu, is expected to run in Ward 18 (Davenport) in his place.

Giambrone's seat is one of many that will be filled by a new face following the next election. High-profile councillors Kyle Rae, Michael Walker and Case Ootes will also not be running for re-election.

Mayoral candidates must also vacate their council seats, meaning Joe Pantalone, Georgio Mammoliti and Rob Ford will be off council if they are not elected mayor.
