There were no serious injuries after a brick wall collapsed on a sidewalk outside a restaurant on Gould Street near Ryerson University on Friday afternoon.

Police waited for a building inspector to assess the safety of the scene before they inspected the rubble to see if anyone was trapped under the debris.

Kim McKinnon of Toronto Emergency Medical Services says two people were treated for minor injuries from light debris.

Bricks and insulation lay scattered on the sidewalk beside the Salad King restaurant in an area frequented by Ryerson students near the busy Yonge-Dundas Square.

Emergency responders cleared the area and then stood by the scene without any visible sense of urgency minutes after the collapse at about 1 p.m.

Witnesses say police performed a thermal scan of the rubble and determined nobody was trapped underneath. Police dogs were also seen sniffing at the rubble.

Chris Sidey was with 40 to 50 other people inside a sushi restaurant under the wall collapse. He says he was just about to order when he heard a big bang.

"There was a big panic and everyone was covering their mouths so they wouldn't inhale the dust," he says.

Two female pedestrians ran out of the way before the bulk of the wall came down, he added.

Tuanoyue also says officials are concerned other parts of the building - including a section along Yonge Street - could be at risk of collapsing.

Traffic is blocked in the area of Yonge and Gould Streets.
