A landmark study is suggesting people who use cellphones for at least 30 minutes a day for 10 years increase their chance of developing brain cancer.

The chance of suffering from a malignant tumour is increased by more than a third with prolonged use, according to a long-awaited report by the World Health Organization.

The study finds there is no increased risk of cancer among people who use their cellphones less than 30 minutes a day. However, scientists admit more research is needed.

Its results, published Sunday, compile data gathered from 13 countries.

The outcome of the 10-year Interphone study had been eagerly anticipated by both the phone industry and those concerned by the health effects of widespread cellphone use. Critics claim omissions and errors have left the study deeply flawed.
