SELWYN FIRTHWhere Selwyn Stands on the Big Issues Facing Toronto: 1. What are your thoughts on Transit City? "People think streetcars are great, they're not polluting, they're mistaken. Every time you stop and start a streetcar it pollutes and heats the atmosphere. I think Transit City needs to be rethought. I would like to see a subway station under Queen Street. There's an unused subway east-west subway station at Queen & Yonge." 2. Bike lanes have become a heated topic during this campaign. Where do you stand on the issue? "Conceptually they're a good idea, but practically they make things worse because they slow traffic flow. I would get rid of bike lanes. I would try to get the province to make bikers have to pass a road test because bikers often don't obey the rules of the road. Bikers should be allowed to ride on the street, but they should follow the rules of the road." 3. How do you feel about the idea of charging road tolls? "No tolls at all. We need new freeways in the city. I believe we should take a second look at building the Spadina highway." 4. How do you plan on cleaning up the city? "There are ideas to give kids areas to spray graffiti, that could work, they need places to express their creativity. And it's about convincing kids this is their city and they need to take pride in it." 5. How do you feel about the crime level in Toronto? How do you plan on addressing it? "I want to see challenges between police stations challenging high schools in games, encouraging interaction between police and youth." 6. How important is accountability while you are in office and how do you plan on monitoring this? "Why do councillors need a $50,000 expenditure fund? I don't like that. I think the budgets of councillors and possibly salaries should be reduced." 7. What are your plans for the city's budget including property taxes? "I think the budget needs to be rethought. There should be a freeze on spending until it gets properly examined. How did David Miller find 100 million dollars? We're spending money like drunken sailors. If my plan for incineration goes ahead, there would be an extra $400,000,000 of money that could be used to cut taxes, that is something I really want. We're throwing away valuable resources when we throw away our garbage and we're hurting future generations as well. Burning garbage would generate new revenue by turning it into electricity."
