Toronto police say an explosion and three-alarm fire that levelled a vacant house in High Park early Tuesday morning is being treated as "suspicious."

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 68 Indian Rd. just before 3:30 a.m. for reports of an explosion.

Two neighbouring homes also caught fire and officials say one firefighter sustained an injury to his shoulder and was taken to hospital for treatment.

An unidentified witness says the house that exploded had been under renovation for some time.

Neighbours were seen running from the scene with pets, children and suitcases.

Fire officials have not said what caused the blaze, police but are working with the Fire Marshall's office in the investigation.

Fifteen fire trucks and about 50 firefighters were at the scene.
