Things got heated at Thursday night's mayoral debate at the University of Toronto after a Rocco Rossi volunteer says George Smitherman swore at her when she tried to hand him campaign material.

According to reports from the scene, as candidates entered the event at the Hart House, a young volunteer for Rossi approached Smitherman with some campaign material. She then says he swore at her.

Smitherman says he let the volunteer "have it," but he claims she "attacked" him.

Rossi has responded to the incident and says that abusive language to a young volunteer is "completely unacceptable."

CP24's next mayoral debate takes place on September 21.
