LONDON, Ont. - The mayor of London, Ont., is getting a cool reception to his idea of creating toll roads for Toronto garbage trucks using the Green Lane landfill site near his city.

Joe Fontana raised the idea recently, after Toronto announced it had sent its last truckload of trash to Michigan and that all its garbage would now be sent to the Green Lane site.

Denzil Minnan-Wong, the head of Toronto's public works committee, says traffic from across Ontario flows through Toronto roads without being asked to help finance street repairs.

He says the garbage trucks use mostly Elgin County and provincial roads to get to the landfill, which is closer to St. Thomas than London, and that Toronto pays $30,000 a year for wear and tear on those roads.

St. Thomas Mayor Heather Jackson-Chapman doesn't have an issue with Toronto trucking its trash to the site, especially since Toronto owns it.

She questions the wisdom of creating toll roads.

"I think if there is an issue then certainly the Ministry of Environment would be involved," Jackson-Chapman said.
