Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Toronto police officer in the shooting death of a 25-year-old man last summer.

Reyal Jensen Jardine-Douglas was fatally shot after getting off a TTC bus on Victoria Park Ave., north of Eglinton Ave. on Aug. 29.

The SIU says Jardine-Douglas was armed with a knife and advanced toward a police officer, while refusing repeated demands to drop the weapon.

Police had been called to the scene, because Jardine-Douglas was reportedly acting irrationally on the bus. He was shot twice, and rushed to hospital, where he later died.

In a press release issued Thursday, SIU director Ian Scott says the officer couldn't remove himself from the threat, because "he had been backed up against a hedge."

The SIU says there are no reasonable grounds to charge any officers in the shooting.

The agency investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
