A Quebec man is in custody after he allegedly phoned in a bomb threat to the prime minister's official residence in Ottawa early Monday.

Police searched 24 Sussex Dr. after an anonymous caller claimed there was a bomb inside Prime Minister Stephen Harper's residence at about 1:30 a.m.

Investigators found nothing inside the home and ruled out any threat to Harper, his family or the public, but they traced the phone call to an apartment in Gatineau, Que.

The RCMP identified a 35-year-old man as a suspect, surrounded the building and made contact with the man, who refused to exit. At one point the man tossed an object at police, but he was eventually taken into custody.

Police don't believe there is any threat to the public because the man doesn't have any registered guns and isn't known for bomb-making or bomb threats.

However, the man is known to police.

Members of the RCMP continue to investigate the bomb threat, but the man is facing charges of assault and uttering threats in relation to the apartment stand-off.
