Rallies are being held across the country to celebrate International Women's Day.

Achievements in all facets of life are being celebrated, 100 years after the first International Women's Day was held.

In some countries, the day is even considered to be a national holiday.

Television personality Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau has joined Plan Canada as a new ambassador for their campaign, "Because I am a Girl."

Gregoire-Trudeau says it is important to important to eliminate poverty to empower woman.

She says increasing education for woman by one year can increase their income by 15 per cent.

"And woman are still the nucleus of the family everywhere. So they are carrying with them their children, their communities, their nations," says Gregoire-Trudeau.
