VANCOUVER - Just hours after a devastating earthquake hit Japan, Canadians have already donated thousands of dollars to help victims.

The donations totalled $77,000, as of Friday afternoon.

The Canadian Red Cross is reaching out online and through social media to raise funds for victims of the catastrophic quake.

Those wishing to make donations can call 1-800-418-1111 or go to the Canadian Red Cross' website.

People can also text the word ASIA, in all capital letters, to 30333.

The powerful 8.9 magnitude quake is the worst in Japan's history.

The earthquake prompted a tsunami warning for the B-C coast but there were no major waves, although warnings remain in place for 20 countries along the Pacific Rim.
