City council is expected to debate Tuesday what type of drinks and snacks should go inside vending machines on city property.

The discussion stems from a push by some to phase out or reduce the amount of sugary drinks in favour of healthier beverages inside vending machines at public buildings.

A proposal to eliminate soda or sugary drinks from machines at city arenas and community centres was canned at a council meeting in late March.

Mayor Rob Ford called the proposed ban "ludicrous."

The push by some councillors is due to rising childhood obesity rates and a public that is becoming more health conscious.

Critics argue a ban wouldn't prevent kids from getting their hands on soft drinks or junk food, and that the choice should rest with their parents or guardians.

Private companies supply drinks and snacks to the vending machines on city property.

Meanwhile, bottled water is to be removed from vending machines by the end of the year as part of the city's bottled water policy.
