After a weekend of warm weather, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement in advance of heavy rain that is expected in Toronto and several other communities in the next two days.

Total rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 millimetres are expected. Thunderstorms may produce higher amounts in some areas.

Rain will begin to fall in southwestern Ontario on Monday afternoon as the system moves over the Great Lakes regions, Environment Canada says.

The heaviest rainfall is expected Monday night and early Tuesday morning before another bout of heavy rain Tuesday afternoon and night.

The rain is due to an intensifying low-pressure system currently located in the U.S.

In Toronto, showers are expected to begin late Monday afternoon with a daytime high of 13 C. There is a risk of a thunderstorm late in the evening and overnight, according to Environment Canada's seven-day forecast.

On Tuesday, the risk of a thunderstorm remains as showers will be heavy at times.

Environment Canada says 15 to 25 mm of rain is expected in Toronto on Monday, followed by another 10 to 20 mm Tuesday.
