The Ontario SPCA has seized about 50 cats from a Toronto home.

The cats were taken from a property at 144 Manor Rd. E. on Sunday.

Police say they were alerted to the residence by a federal election pollster who noticed a foul odour.

About 20 cats have already been treated by a veterinarian on site and given to the OSPCA.

OSPCA Spokesperson Alison Cross says it will take time to catch and treat the others.

Cross says the seizure was necessary because of the conditions the cats were living in.

According to police the cats never went outside. The wooden floors inside the home were warped by cat urine.

"There is definitely concern about the animals and the living conditions," Cross tells CP24. "Having that many animals roam without proper housing and proper cleaning can be very disruptive to their respiratory systems and their skin and that's a serious concern of ours."

Diane Way, 63, is charged with cruelty to animals and causing unnecessary suffering to animals in connection with the seizure. Her first court appearance is scheduled for June 9.

Way teaches at George Brown College.
