Ontario's Ministry of Labour is investigating after a man got his head caught between elevator doors in a building on Richmond Street.

Emergency crews were called to 534 Richmond St. W. in downtown Toronto shortly before midnight Wednesday.

Toronto police say the mishap occurred while the repairman was fixing doors that had jammed on a large construction elevator.

As he was inspecting the doors, they suddenly closed and trapped his head. The man, who is in his 50s, was stuck for several minutes.

Crews freed the man, who was transported to hospital to be treated for serious injuries, although he is expected to survive, police say.
