Montreal-bound passengers at Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport were delayed for more than an hour after a plane's wheel sank into the rain-soaked ground and became stuck Tuesday night.

The odd incident occurred when the plane was taxiing at a low rate of speed and made an expected sharp turn to get onto the runway, Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told CP24 on Wednesday.

The rear wheel went off the paved area and onto the grass, where it sank into the soggy ground and became stuck.

Fitzpatrick said the experienced pilot stopped the plane and officials decided it would be better to wait and lift the wheel out, instead of forcing it out and risking damage to the plane.

As a result, passengers were taken off the plane and put on the next flight, which departed about 80 minutes later.

A person who contacted CP24 about the incident said the Air Canada Bombardier Q400 aircraft got stuck at about 9:15 p.m.

No one was injured and the passengers were taken off the plane about 35 minutes later, the person said.

Air Canada began offering flights between Toronto and Montreal out of the city's island airport Sunday.
