A man in his 20s is facing impaired driving charges after a luxury car crashed into a pole and bus shelter Friday morning.

The BMW 645 was travelling north on Carnforth Road at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control at a curve approaching Lawrence Avenue East.

Police said the car veered off the road and plowed into a light standard, exposing some live wires, and then crashed through an unoccupied bus shelter at the intersection shortly before 6 a.m.

The driver was arrested about a block from the scene. He is facing a charge of impaired driving, but additional charges are likely, police said.

A female passenger was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Shortly after the crash, a person who lives in the area called police to report the BMW missing. Police are now investigating whether the driver had the owner's permission to drive it.

Lawrence Avenue's eastbound lanes have reopened to traffic.

Because of the crash, the 91 Woodbine bus was diverting around the scene via Victoria Park Avenue, Sloane Avenue and Sweeney Drive, missing four bus stops.

'Dressed like they were at a party'

Witnesses tell CP24 that the car's four occupants - two males and two females "dressed like they were at a party" - ran from the scene.

One witness told CP24's Cam Woolley that the girls were wearing "fancy dresses," and all four were screaming expletives as they fled.

The car sustained significant damage to its front end. Its airbags deployed upon impact.

Police officers used their in-car fire extinguishers to douse a small engine fire that broke out.

In addition to police, firefighters, paramedics and Toronto Hydro employees responded to the scene.

Firefighters put sand on the road to absorb some fluids that leaked from the car.
