Environment Canada has confirmed that a "downburst wind" event occurred in Coboconk Wednesday and may have also struck Minden Hills.

A downburst wind is a contained area of strong winds resulting from a thunderstorm.

Though not as powerful as a tornado, emergency preparedness meteorologist Geoff Coulson said downburst winds can be just as damaging.

Crews will be heading to Scarborough tonight to assess the damage there, Coulson said.

Many still without power

Meanwhile, 65,000 people are still without power in Ontario.

Hydro One said it would take several days before power is fully restored because of the volume of incidents.

The outages are concentrated in Southern Ontario. The hardest hit areas are Kingston, Brockville, Tweed, Peterborough and Fenelon Falls.

Extra crews have been brought in to restore electricity and replace hundreds of broken poles, but their efforts may be hampered by another series of storms that are expected Thursday.

Storm wreaks havoc in GTA

Outages have been mostly restored across the Greater Toronto Area, where extreme thunderstorms dropped golf ball-sized hail, downed power lines and uprooted large trees onto homes and cars after an afternoon of record-breaking heat.

As of 7:30 p.m. only 60 customers remained without power.

Most of the outages are in Scarborough, East York and North York.

The brunt of the storm hit the east end, where Scarborough residents are cleaning up and assessing property damage.

In Vaughan, lightning struck several homes, setting some of them on fire. No injuries were reported.

Golf ball-sized hail was reported near Bathurst Street and Highway 7, while and gumball-sized hail fell in the Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue area.

At the height of the storm, about 5,000 customers were without power, Toronto Hydro said.

There are unconfirmed reports of tornadoes near Minden Hills in the Peterborough area.
