A city councillor is pushing to expand Toronto's BIXI bike-sharing program.

Coun. Mike Layton will bring up the matter at a public works and infrastructure meeting on Thursday. His plan is to ask the city's Transportation department for advice on how to best expand the program into more neighbourhoods across Toronto.

"This is an innovative program that Torontonians are proud of," Layton said in a release. "Since day one, every day I receive requests from constituents for BIXI stations in their neighbourhoods."

"BIXI needs to be expanded to meet the commuter, tourist and recreational needs of our city, not just the downtown core."

The BIXI program first launched in Toronto in May.

In its first month of operation, more than 64,000 trips were recorded on the bicycles.

Layton's motion asks for transportation services to report back on a possible expansion plan by September 7.
