York Regional Police and the province's Special Investigations Unit have cordoned off a Markham home where a couple believed to be husband and wife have been killed.

The scene unfolded last night on Cottonwood Court at around 11 p.m., according to police.

When police arrived at the Bayview Avenue and John Street area home, they found two people at the scene, one of whom was suffering from obvious signs of trauma.

There are few details on what happened next but it is believed police officers at the scene got into an altercation with the second person at the home.

That person was shot and killed.

The SIU -- an agency that investigates cases where civilians suffer serious or fatal injuries in the presence of police -- was called to the scene to carry out a second investigation.

Investigators are expected to remain at the scene for the remainder of the day.
