A 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Virginia was felt by people throughout Toronto this afternoon.

There are reports from people all over the GTA who felt the ground shake for about 10 seconds at 2 p.m.. Reports came from Brantford, Markham, Bradford, Scarborough, Beeton, Collingwood and Barrie, where city hall was briefly evacuated.

There have been no reports of serious damage as a result, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority has confirmed that the quake is not affecting flights and Alison Bird of Natural Resources Canada told CP24 that even if the earthquake struck a little closer to home, it wouldn't have wreaked havoc on the city.

"We have a very good building code and we started really getting serious with seismic considerations in the 1980s, so modern buildings would do very well and even older buildings that have been retrofitted would suffer some damage, but wouldn't collapse," she said.

On Twitter the quake was, nonetheless, a hot topic.

"That was so scary. Im lying down on my bed, my bed starts shaking then I got up and my shelves are shaking," @TrendyMom2010 tweeted CP24.

"We are in a North York office building and it kept swaying. Much more than last year," @kiranjiya tweeted CP24, referrencing the 5.0 magnitude quake that rocked Echo Lake, Quebec last June.

Even more viewers called or emailed CP24 to share their experience.

"It probably lasted from 10 to 15 seconds and I knew at that point in time that it was an earthquake and I just kind of waited it out," one viewer from Aurora said.

"I was just sitting in my apartment on my bed when all of a sudden I started to feel this shaking and then I looked over and my fish tank was about to fall off the shelf," another from North York added.
