The battle over the future of the port lands continues, as Mayor Rob Ford and his inner circle want to scrap the urban park idea in favour of a major hotel and retail complex.

The mayor's brother Coun. Doug Ford joined CP24 live at noon today and described a vision which includes a monorail with numerous stops, a luxury hotel, and an exclusing shopping centre. He said the land has been vacant for too long, and that it's a waste of possible revenue.

Ford says there are no immediate plans for the land and that his idea could generate billions of dollars from the private sector for the city.

Cynthia Wilkey, chair of the West Don Lands Committee, has been working on a plan for the area for 14 years. She says what Coun. Ford is proposing can't work and disregards seven years of planning and millions of dollars.

But the councillor says his vision has the potential to be a huge success -- one that will create thousands of jobs.

Ford says the next step is to take the idea to the public for consultation and to council's executive committee.
