Highway 400's northbound lanes were closed near Cookstown after a motorcycle crash that sent one person to hospital with serious injuries Friday morning.

Police said a man in his 40s was airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto after his motorcycle crashed in the northbound lanes at about 11:20 a.m. The man's condition wasn't immediately available.

ORNGE officials told CP24 that the man suffered a serious leg injury when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail.

Highway 400's northbound lanes are blocked between highways 88 and 89 as police investigate. Northbound motorists should expect significant delays or congestion in the area.

The southbound lanes, which were closed for about 30 minutes to allow the helicopter to land, have reopened.

OPP are asking motorists to avoid the area or to use highways 11 and 27 as alternate routes.

The crash scene is about 60 kilometres north of Toronto.
