The union representing Oakville Transit drivers has come to an agreement that will prevent its members from walking off the job at midnight.

Paulo Ribeiro, a spokesman for the Canadian Auto Workers Union, told CP24 that a tentative deal was reached Friday afternoon. Membership still have to approve the deal during a meeting Sunday evening.

"We won't get into details until details are shared with the membership on Sunday evening," he said. "We do feel that it's a fair and reasonable agreement."

Talks had stalled: union

In a recent news release, CAW Local 1256 said Tuesday contract talks had stalled after five months of negotiations and Oakville Transit has failed to address staff concerns, including scheduling rights, vacations and treatment of injured workers.

"Wages, benefits and other monetary issues have not yet come up for discussion at the bargaining table," the news release stated.

The union was accusing Oakville Transit of making an "inordinate number" of unjust terminations and suspensions targeting injured workers.

Disabled workers who are currently off work and receiving WSIB benefits or short-term disability benefits have been forced to use personal vacation time during their period of recuperation, the union claimed.
